My name is Rovee and I have been a Medical Volunteer since 2019, volunteering at events such as the Motor GP and World Super Bikes. A social media post was all it took for me to sign up and volunteer for Motor Sports Australia, as it seemed like a great opportunity as a Nursing Student to get clinical experience while still also having fun. I was quite nervous at the first event, especially because I was still a studying to be a nurse, but easily found my feet with the help of the team I was working with.
As a Medical Volunteer, we are stationed trackside as the first responders for any rider incidents. We are thoroughly trained to keep the riders and everyone around us safe, and we work as a team to problem solve any incidents quickly and professionally.
I chose to volunteer with Motor Sports Australia to build connections, network with other volunteers and create new experiences within my in medical career. It was incredibly interesting to be working with so many Medics with so many different medical backgrounds and it was always exciting to be up and close to the trackside action. Being trackside allowed me to practice and enhance my clinical knowledge, especially in quick and high-pressure situations. We also got the opportunity to attend Official’s Events, such as dinners, which gave us the opportunity to mingle with other officials while also offering cool experiences such as going into race control and meeting the riders. Along with all the skill building, I also got to have a lot of fun and going to these events also created a new interest in motor sports.
I would recommend that students in the medical field grab on to this volunteering opportunity as it’s a great way to get work experience, enhance clinical skills and knowledge, learn to work with a team, make new friends and is always a good resume reference when applying for those big jobs.
See you trackside!
